Steplab Intensive

 Steplab Intensive

I had the privilege of attending a Steplab Intensive training day. If anybody is starting their journey as a Steplab Coach, I highly recommend the intensive. It was fast-paced but covered the most important parts of coaching: observations, planning your feedback, and rehearsal.

The Steplab coaching cycle stretches over 4 - 6 weeks. It flows from observation to feedback and back to observation again. See the diagram below.

Your starting point is when you connect and clarify what will happen during coaching sessions, and what your. role as a coach is. It's important to build a relationship with your coachee.

The active mechanism to have successful PD consist of 4 main areas:

Building knowledge, Motivating staff, developing teaching techniques and embedding practice.

The intensive then takes you through how to gather quality observational notes, gather evidence of goals achieved, plan and praise to prompt coachees into reflection, select the coachee's next step, plan questions on how to agree on the next step, plan how to model it to the teacher (video or yourself) and finally rehearsing it and agreeing to when it can be observed in action.

After this intensive, I felt more sure of what to do and how to do it.
